Returning to his romantic comedy roots after Vanilla Sky, helmer Cameron Crowe throws a friendly party with Elizabethtown, laying on colorful characters, witty banter and a constant stream of vintage tunes. However, bash lasts too long, and guests try too hard to have fun, and pic's busy, neo-screwball script -- about a shoe designer planning his father's funeral in a Kentucky town while falling for a perky stewardess met en route -- suffers from arch editing and a surfeit of whimsical subplots. Modest B. O. looks likely.

Although presumably in development for some time, basic set-up sounds like a sunnier, studio version of Zach Braff's indie hit Garden State, which beat Elizabethtown to the punch by a year and a half. State was a similar tale of a depressed young man who travels back East for a parent's funeral and ends up finding love with a gorgeous, hip chick. But where Braff's pic was riddled with slacker angst and featured characters with jagged edges, nearly everyone in Elizabethtown is as gosh-darn nice as a warm sunny day.

The only real exceptions are a couple of meanies at the West Coast corporate headquarters of footwear company Mercury, where workaholic protagonist Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) is introduced. ... read more

According to Elizabethtown, there's a world of difference between fiasco and failure.

"Failure is simply the non-presence of success," says Orlando Bloom, as shoe designer Drew Baylor, in a voice-over. "But a fiasco is a disaster of mythic proportions. "

After drawing that distinction, Drew, who has fashioned a debacle of an athletic shoe, scuttles through the offices of the footwear giant he works for, avoiding the sad stares of his colleagues. "I'm fine," he insists.

Sadly, Elizabethtown, written and directed by the talented Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire), is not fine at all.

Though it's no fiasco - there's nothing mythic about its disjointed story - it is a failure.

The first 20 minutes of the film show such promise that the movie's subsequent unraveling feels all the more disappointing. ... read more

What's the difference between a failure and a fiasco. That's the first question Orlando Bloom's character, Drew Baylor, asks himself in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, and the question he keeps asking throughout. It also echoes some of the critical response that followed the movie's premiere at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, making it seem uncannily prescient and self-aware.

In Toronto, Elizabethtown was introduced with a disclaimer, and Crowe has since trimmed it by about 15 minutes. But I doubt the edit will change the minds of anyone who didn't like it the first time around. The new version remains, in many ways, a mess of a movie . but a warm, friendly mess that's hard not to like, even when it tests your patience.

Despite his own success, Crowe seems unusually drawn to big-scale failure both as a subject and a mind-altering experience. ... read more

After losing his job, shoe designer Drew Baylor contemplates suicide. Then his life changes when he meets an optimistic airline attendant. Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst star in a film written and directed by Cameron Crowe
Cameron Crowe has never been the most disciplined of directors. Well known for being unable to let go of his projects, his Oscar-winning Almost Famous (2000) spawned a DVD 'Bootleg Cut' that ran over two-and-a-half hours long. His latest, the wistful romantic comedy Elizabethtown, had 12 minutes pruned from it after a tour of the autumn film festival circuit. Sadly, it's not enough; like life in the eponymous Kentucky town, Crowe's film is amiable enough but slow-paced. A tribute, in part, to his late father, it's also very indulgent and rather hollow at its core.

The film begins as hotshot shoe designer Drew Baylor (Bloom) takes an almighty tumble. ... read more
This Year's 'Garden State'??
The main reason I can see for viewing this film is if you're a particular fan of Orlando Bloom or Kirsten Dunst. Myself, I waited eagerly for the release of this film because I read promotions for it that compared it to one of my favourite films - 'Garden State'.

Yes, a male in his mid 20's travels somewhere to deal with practicalities concerning a parent's death and meets a girl who has some significance to him whilst doing this. But I wouldn't say the feel of the film is in any way comparable. There just isn't anything that stood out about this film to me, nothing special about the cinematography, dialogue, overall plot. I was so disappointed. If you liked 'Garden State'. watch it again rather than sit through 'Elizabethtown'. ... read more
mmm, i actuallly liked it!
. unlike most people who have left reviews. I liked almost famous and was very unsure about this, as it does look a touch lightweight. I'm glad to say that it's a really good film, with dunst in top form and nicely shot and directed scenes. It's quite funny in parts, typically cool in others, touching at times and always holds your interest. As for the complaint about the flags, well, have you been to the states. that's what it's actually like. So no problem there, just enjoy the film and don't be so bloody high and mighty, its's a decent film. Bloom was alright in this, not great but not bad either, which is fine, this isn't an acting masterclass, just a film to watch, so give this film a go if you liked almost famous, or virgin suicides, which it reminded me of. ... read more
Diabolical
This must be one of the worst films I have seen in many years. It was actually embarrasing to watch such terrible directing, script and actors. It tries to be funny and quirky but just falls flat. There are American flags hanging up in nearly every scene, and I thought it was meant to be a pi*s take of stereo typical small american town syndrome but then realized it actually was just a very patriotic director. The rest of the film made me cringe and had to switch it off eventually because it was too painful watching a film trying so hard to be something it was could never achieve. I would almost recomend you watch it just to see how bad this thing is, or just to take the mickey. Zero stars
